Worn Out Clutch on a Mercedes

Have you ever seen a worn out clutch like this?

This vehicle came into our workshop today with a lack of drive. We suspected the clutch was slipping so removed the gearbox to facilitate access to the clutch.

We were shocked to not only find the clutch centre plate completely worn out, but also the clutch cover plate was destroyed!

Here are RPL Automotive's tips to extend the life of your clutch

  1. Don’t ride the clutch - This is the first rule of long clutch life, don’t use your clutch pedal as a foot rest.
  2. Don’t use the clutch to keep from rolling backwards on a hill – Use your handbrake, it’s what it was intended for.
  3. Don’t keep driving full-tilt when you see a red light ahead - Begin slowing down in advance when you see stopped traffic, a red light or another reason you’re going to have to stop ahead.
  4. Don’t drive away from a stop light like you’re Nigel Mansell - Keep the RPM low and pull away slowly to avoid revving the engine and slipping the clutch more than necessary.
  5. Don’t use the clutch to save your brakes - Your clutch costs more to replace than brake pads do. Use the clutch as intended.
